Outpatient clinics, also known as the Outpatient Department (OPD), provide diagnosis and care for patients who do not require overnight hospitalization. OPD is primarily or entirely intended for outpatient care.
The Outpatient Department is critical to the hospital's overall operation. It is typically integrated with in-patient services and staffed by consultant physicians and surgeons who also see inpatients on the wards. Many patients are examined and treated as outpatients before being admitted to the hospital as inpatients at a later date. They may return to the outpatient clinic for follow-up care after being discharged.
